One step at a time

We all know the story of “Thanh Giong”. It was one of my favorite when I was a kid, and still one of my favorite now. The messages it delivers however, changes with time and with me growing up.

For me, it has two main messages, one of which we should keep at heart, and the other, forget. We should keep at heart that when anything happens to our country even a child can stand up and help, so do we. It shows our strength at one. What we should forget, is the other message, that a kid can grow up in just one day, go to war and win it. It delivers the wrong message, and make us think that we don’t need to train/study hard for most days; When the time comes we just need to focus, power up, then with some miracle and the genius we are within ourselves we’ll be able to tackle any obstacle (with the concrete example of studying English and passing the TOEFL or IELT test … ) Well, forget it. One needs to learn and practice from day-to-day. Learning is most of the time not very entertaining, even boring, but without it you’ll never get to your goal of a chance to study abroad.

Tragedy in Japan

I heard about it, but not only when my college friend post a note on facebook about his experience with the earthquake, as well as another friend update her status about how their lives have been affected, it hits me and feels so real…

And as if the largest recorded earthquake followed by a tsunami is not enough for them, now they are facing their worst nuclear accident, according to NY Times and VOA News. They are struggling to find food on empty shelves at the grocery stores, their houses and villages destroyed. International students and officers (like my friends) in Japan of course have the experience of their life.

Pray for Japan. And for my friends, I wish them well.

So I came across my friend’s link on facebook: What’s Your Six-Word Love Story?, which is a part of  ”What’s your Six-Word Memoirs” project.

Telling your story in six words is actually not easy. You have to get to the core of it, and choose words wisely. Both from the NY Times blog and the original Six-Word website you’ll find hilarious memoirs, serious memoirs, just western-style life memoirs (some of them are not suitable for U18!).

Right now, mine would be something like “Just do it. Till the end.”

It’s the new year and everyone wants to talk success. However, no matter how much we wanted, last year ended with something we fail.

And Have A Happy New Year

It is only a few days until the new year – year of the Cat. I bet you guys are now busy cleaning up your house, decorating, cooking, preparing…

This is the time for family get together. I remember how we spent the day preparing for a big meal to celebrate the new year. I always enthusiastically waiting for the “Giao thua” play (the one about Ong Tao Ve Troi), I would watch it and compare it with last year’s. I was happily waiting for the midnight, feeling the holiday spirit in the air.

Of course with years far from home, I don’t have the luxury to celebrate and enjoy Tet like that anymore. Tet usually coincide with the most busy weeks in the semester with all the midterms and students coming for office hour. However, we, students oversea, still try to gather together, having a pot luck party (party where each person bring a dish or contribute something), and celebrate it in the weekend.

Well I said we’ll try to blog everyday, but I think now everyone is very busy, this is not a good time to study after all

A new year is coming. I wish you all a happy time with family and friends, and a wonderful year ahead, with full of success and joy.

Listening practice for the TOEFL test

Yes the test is getting harder. When I took it, it was still paper-based, when I had a chance to glance quickly at the answers first, have an idea what they will be talking about and what might be the question, and focus on it. Now with computer-based test, unfortunately you lost that opportunity

However, there is still something you can do. And it was what I did back then, too. For the long talk, we all know that it will be a lecture about something, geography, science, history, … . So if you have some previous knowledge about it, even if you don’t catch everything they say, you can still guess the answer, since it is just a common knowledge

So you can do some more reading, listen more on the subjects that might be on the test. And believe me, it will be helpful for your own good later

I would suggest you trying NPR for this kind of listening, VOA (Voice of America) is good too, but they don’t talk much about science.

Em Phan Hồ Anh Thư, hiện đang là Trợ giảng tại Bộ môn Giải Tích, Khoa Toán – Tin học, Đại học Khoa học Tự nhiên, Tp. Hồ Chí Minh.

Dự kiến ngày 12/02/2011, em Thư sẽ trải qua ca đại phẫu để lấy tủy ghép cho em trai bị căn bệnh suy tủy. Đây là ca phẫu thuật phức tạp và chi phí rất lớn, dự kiến từ 500 đến 700 triệu đồng. Trong khi đó, ba mẹ em hiện là giáo viên cấp 2 trường làng (Quảng Nam) nên kinh tế rất eo hẹp.

Qua thư ngỏ này Công đoàn Khoa Toán – Tin học rất mong nhận được sự chia sẻ về mặt vật chất cũng như tinh thần từ những tấm lòng hảo tâm quý Thầy Cô và các bạn Đồng nghiệp để giúp em Thư cứu sống em trai.

Merriam-Webster online and word stories

Just in case you don’t know it, the online dictionary Merriam Webster once in a while has a very interesting post about various topics about words. Recently there is a Top 10 words with remarkable origins.

Normally we accept the word as it is. However, words are in fact living things. Think about how our own Vietnamese language, how many new words are added each year, how the old words change their own meanings, and how some words are so out-dated that no one wants to use it. The same thing happens with English (as well as other language). Thus by reading this, you not only learn new words, but also know about its history. A bit something for someone who wants to know where this come from and how it ends up here.

Tet, the Vietnamese new year.

So I planed to write a short post about Tet. But wait. There are plenty of articles about Tet that we can easily google (yes, Google for the win ) so there we go. With the key word “Vietnamese new year” off it provides thousands of online articles. Amongst which, Wikipedia’s is the very first result and seems to have the most information. Personally I don’t really like the writing style. It reads Vietnamese style of writing English to me (like my writing style… to be honest )

Next on the list is from AmCham Vietnam. Short, informative, with links to further reading.

My favorite finding is, guess what, a lesson plan on TeacherLINK! The Tet description is in the background section (background here means ”basic knowledge”) It is beautifully written, informative, and of course, authentic American English writing style. It is definitely worth reading and I believe you’ll learn new words, as well as grammar and language style there.

So we talked a lot about studying English and how to get better at English. Let’s have a look at how foreigners learn Vietnamese… it might help one thing or two

I would like to introduce (well… he scarcely needs our introduction If only he can introduce us himself ) Joe, with the familiar Vietnamese name Mr. Dâu Tây. You can find him on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/mrdautay?v=wall or his personal webpage at http://joe.vn/. By reading his posts I hope you’ll get an idea how learning foreign language might be. Also, he provides many interesting information about the cultural difference, hence the wording difference between Vietnam and, say, English speaking countries like his home Canada. You’ll learn that sometimes there are no English correspondence for a Vietnamese word and vice versa.

Học từ vựng thế nào?

Tình hình là mình nghĩ mình nên có thêm các posts bằng tiếng Việt để giúp các bạn mới học anh văn Hôm qua mình mới nói sơ qua về việc học ngữ pháp. Hôm nay mình sẽ nói về vấn đề học từ vưng.

Nếu các bạn tìm một chút sẽ thấy trong blog này các tác giả đã có một số bài về vấn đề học từ. Cho nên hôm nay mình sẽ chỉ viết ngắn gọn bằng tiếng Việt để giúp các bạn mới bắt đầu học tiếng Anh thôi nhé.

Thật ra mà nói, mình cũng lười học từ vựng lắm. Nhưng mà từ vựng là cái mà mình không thể không học… Và từ thì rất nhiều… nhiều lắm. Phương pháp chung vẫn là học thường xuyên và ôn luyện thường xuyên.

Nếu các bạn lười học từ như mình, thì cách tốt nhất là thay đổi cách học từ mới thường xuyên Khi nào mình cảm thấy một cách học không còn hấp dẫn nữa thì mình đổi qua các khác. Sau đây là các cánh mà mình đã thử, xào nấu, quay đi quay lại

Một số điều cần lưu ý khi học từ mới:

1. PHÁT ÂM!!! Rất quan trọng nhé. Bạn nên phát âm đúng ngay từ lần đầu học, đừng để thành thói quen thì khó sửa lắm.

2. Nếu là danh từ: đếm được hay không đếm được (countable or uncountable).

3. Nếu là động từ: transitive hay intransitive (hơ cái này mình không biết dịch ra thế nào). Thì quá khứ (past tense) và quá khứ hoàn thành (hình như thế) như thế nào, nếu là irregular verbs.

Và các cách học từ mới:

1. Sổ ghi từ mới.

2. Flash card. Bạn có thể tự làm bằng cách cắt giấy tập cũ ra, một mặt ghi từ mặt còn lại ghi định nghĩa. Một số bạn chọn ghi phiên âm (để giúp đọc chính xác) ở mặt sau, chỗ ghi định nghĩa. Mình thì thích ghi phiêm âm ở mặt trước, chung với chỗ ghi từ. Tình hình là khi thấy từ, mình sẽ tự lẩm nhẩm và suy nghĩ đến định nghĩa, thế nên luôn cần có phiên âm để đảm bảo mình không đọc sai.

3. Viết từ lại nhiều lần. Hơi con nít và mất thời gian, nhưng hiệu quả lắm nhé

5. Đặt câu với mỗi từ mới học.

…

Và quan trọng không kém, đó là phải ôn luyện thường xuyên. Đọc báo nhiều cũng giúp mình tăng vốn từ nhanh.

Học ngữ pháp thế nào?

Do bài viết này dành cho các bạn mới học, mình sẽ viết bằng tiếng Việt nhé.

Nói chung là lâu nay mình không nhấn mạnh việc học ngữ pháp lắm, lý do chính là mình nghĩ SV VN tụi mình giỏi văn phạm. Tuy nhiên gần đây suy nghĩ lại, có lẽ tụi mình cũng phải đề cập đến việc này một cách nghiêm túc. Sau đây là một số những điểm chúng mình hay sai:

1. Thì của động từ: Các bạn mới học AV sẽ thấy rằng ngữ pháp tiếng Anh khác ngữ pháp tiếng Việt rất nhiều. Động từ thì có bao nhiêu là thì (hiện tại, quá khứ, tương lai,…) trong khi tiếng Việt mình thì có thì thiếc gì đâu! Đây là một trong những trở ngại lớn của SV VN tụi mình. Gần đây mình để ý có nhiều bạn học tiếng Anh lâu ngày nhưng mà động từ chia vẫn sai Các bạn biết không, tiếng Anh thế là dễ rồi đấy, chỉ có khoảng một nửa số thì mà động từ tiếng Pháp có Thôi thì chúng ta phải học luật chia động từ và làm bài tập thường xuyên thôi. Sau thời gian ban đầu khó chịu các bạn sẽ dần quen với nó, khi ấy sẽ lại thấy thoải mái.

2. Giới từ: In, on, at, … khi nào dùng từ nào??? Cái này thì cũng có một số luật, nhưng tình hình chung là chúng ta phải học thuộc và nhớ thôi.

Để học tốt ngữ pháp thì không có cách nào khác ngoài học thuộc các luật và các trường hợp ngoại lệ (tiếng Anh hơi bị nhiều trường hợp ngoại lệ đấy nhé ) và luyện tập thường xuyên, giống như thành ngữ “trăm hay không bằng tay quen”. “Gần nghĩa” với thành ngữ này là idiom “Practice makes perfect” của tiếng Anh. Riêng với mình thì mình thích cách nói tiếng Anh/Mỹ hơn, nó khuyến khích mình luyện tập, đúng không các bạn?

Đọc sách báo nước ngoài, hoặc các bài do người nước ngoài viết cũng là một cách hiệu quả để học ngữ pháp. Mỗi lầnđọc các bạn chỉ cần để ý thêm một chút về cách người ta dùng ngữ pháp và các giới từ thì các bạn sẽ tích lũy được thêm nhiều kinh nghiệm và kiến thức thực tế lắm đấy.
