The distinction between “affect” and “effect” trips up lots of people, but with one or two little mnemonics, you can master this tricky pair in probably 95% of cases.

Effect is almost always used as a noun meaning “the result of some action.”

Affect is almost always used as a verb meaning “to influence or bring about change.”

Affect, which is an action (another word for “verb”), starts with an a, like action. There’s your first mnemonic. When something affects something else, it has an effect. The affect or verb happens first and the effect or noun second, just as affect comes first in the alphabet and effect second. There’s your second mnemonic.

My experience with mnemonics tends to be that once I’ve had to use them enough, I internalize the underlying grammar that they help me to remember so that I no longer have to remember…

We all know how a powerful vocabulary may improve our English proficiency. It makes us look smarter (seriously! 😉 ), helps us better explaining ourselves and understanding others. A common way to learn vocabulary for ESL students is to memorize words. However, I would say the best way is to invest some time in learning root words, prefixes and suffixes. These will help you guess the meaning of new words and memorize them easier (make sure you still look it up in a dictionary to get the precise meaning and any other implication it might have). They can even help you guess what a word you want might look like.

Tiếng Anh cho người đã đi làm – Phần 2

Hai năm trước chúng tôi đã có một bài viết về tiếng Anh dành cho người đã đi làm. Hôm nay, tôi xin được giới thiệu thêm một nguồn học tiếng Anh hay và miễn phí cho người đã đi làm. Đặc biệt hơn, lần này dành riêng cho người Việt Nam.

Có lẽ nhiều bạn đã biết đến VOA News và chương trình Special English, trong đó bản tin tiếng Anh được đọc chậm rãi để người học tiếng Anh có thể nghe theo. Có một trang nữa mà có lẽ ít người biết đến, đó là VOA Tiếng Việt tại http://www.voatiengviet.com. Trang này trước đây trực thuộc VOA News, do sau này phát triển mạnh mẽ nên đã tách ra hẳn một website riêng. Ở đây có phần Học tiếng Anh với tổng cộng 5 mục nhỏ:

• Anh ngữ sinh động do Phạm Văn phụ trách với mục đích dạy đàm thoại cho người học có trình độ trung cấp. Nội dung bài học từ dạy phát âm chuẩn tiếng Anh Mỹ đến cách sử dụng các từ/cụm từ một cách chính xác, phân biệt các từ gần nghĩa, v.v…
• Từ và Thành ngữ do Huyền Trang phụ trách là chương trình chú ý đến các thành ngữ thông dụng, ít khi được dạy trong các lớp tiếng Anh chính quy. Các thành ngữ được giải thích cặn kẽ và đi kèm với mẫu câu ví dụ.

Great explanation on the subtle differences between “can” and “may”

I believe it’s generally known that “can” is the favored verb when asking about whether it’s physically or mentally possible to do a thing and “may” is favored when asking for permission, but there turn out to be some nuances that can be a little confusing. With the help of Bryan A. Garner’s A Dictionary of Modern American Usage (which I refer to often in these posts), I’ll outline some of the nuances.

First, Garner allows that in speech and informal writing, the distinction is insisted upon only by the “insufferable precisian.” So when blogging informally, feel free to use “can” in place of “may.” In fact, among three caveats Garner offers is one suggesting that over-use of “may” can give your writing a prissy tone.

Princeton Review Vocabulary Minute Podcast

Hi all,

A while ago, we have introduced a couple of great (and free) English learning podcasts, including the ESLPod. Have you started listening to any podcast yet? If you haven’t, there is one more reason for you to do so.

Recently I discovered The Princeton Review (yes, the one who published a couple of TOEFL, TOEIC, and GRE books you found in big Vietnamese bookstores) also have their own Podcast series to help us learning English. Here you can really learn English by listening to songs. I am serious! They create songs specifically to help you learning new words. The songs aim at native English speakers, but we ESL students can still benefit a lot from them.

You can find the podcast, named “Princeton Review Vocabulary Minute Podcast” in iTunes store. If you don’t have iTunes and/or don’t want to/cannot install iTunes on your computer, try at Learn Out Loud, where you can also stream it online or download to your computer . Hôm nay tôi tình cờ thấy một trang web khá hay cho biết kinh nghiệm học tiếng Anh và các giáo trình bạn có thể dùng để tham khảo. Như đã đề cập trước đây, không có cách học tiếng Anh nào là tốt nhất, chỉ có cách học phù hợp nhất với tính cách và phong cách học của từng người. Vì vậy, tôi mong thông tin này sẽ giúp các bạn có thêm một kinh nghiệm, cách nhìn nhận mới về học Anh văn, và tìm ra phương pháp học tốt nhất cho mình.

Lâu nay mình thường giới thiệu các trang web nước ngoài. Các trang trong nước thường không có bố cục chặt chẽ, nhiều quảng cáo, và ít được chăm chút cẩn thận. Vì thế, hôm nay mình rất vui khi tìm được một trang web dạy Anh Văn nhìn trang nhã, đẹp và chuyên nghiệp, nội dung đa dạng, nhiều tài liệu miễn phí, sẵn sàng để các bạn tìm hiểu.

Đó là website http://www.yeuanhvan.com/, được lập nên bởi thầy Nhân, một thầy giáo dạy Anh Văn. Website có nội dung đa dạng và phong phú, cho cả người học và người dạy học. Các bạn nào đang học TOEFL, TOEIC, hoặc IELTS có thể có thêm một số phương pháp học và bài học bổ ích. Ngoài ra ở đây còn có kho tài liệu và diễn đàn riêng để các bạn tìm hiểu.

Wordnik – a new kind of dictionary

Today I learned about Wordnik http://www.wordnik.com/about from The daily post at WordPress.com. Even though the definition here is mostly from other dictionaries, Wordnik has a number of advantages over traditional dictionaries: it

– gives many examples (which is always good if you want to better understand a word) from major news media and project Gutenberg, blogs, ect.

– allows you to create your own profile and word lists, and share them with your friends. This is a good way to learn word, and even better with friends.

– allows you to have your favorite words: ” Logged-in Wordniks can mark words as Favorites. When you “Love” a word it will be added to your list of Favorite Words, and it will get some special hearts (which only the person who favorited the word will see) ”

– provides several lists of related words, which is great to quickly improve your vocabulary.

– has relevant images from Flickr.

– also has word of the day and random word.

Of course, it is always useful to double check a word’s definition in a traditional dictionaries.

Free English video lessons

Today I stumped across engVid at www.engvid.com. This website provide more than 300 video lessons by experienced native speaker teachers (American), covering a wide range of topics,  from grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, TOELF, etc. While the videos do not provide in-depth knowledge, they are good resource for intermediate to advanced students to review English and improve their listening skills. The speaking speed is classroom standard,  maybe a bit faster than in the TOELF test, so they would be useful for practice if you are aiming for TOEFL.

English saying – 1

Today we learn a way of saying in English:

Haste makes waste.
“Haste” is used to describe an unnecessarily quick action or a thoughtless, rash, or undue speed (su voi vang). “Waste” has many different meanings. Here it means a  neglection (waste of opportunity), or anything unused, unproductive,  or not properly utilized. This tells us not to rush a work, as it will lead to waste of resources, making of wrong decisions, and resulting in imprecised products. Thus, we should take the time needed (not waiting until the last minute) to do our work.

Can you find an equivalence to this saying in Vietnamese? And can you make an example using this saying?
