Practice writing – 5 – Opening our own companies or…

“Some people prefer to take a position in a company and work for the company.
Other people think it is better to go into business for themselves. Which do you think is better?

Anh here is Viet Cuong’s essay about this topic.

People have to work to earn money to pay off their life. Working is neccessery element. However, how they work, they are self-employed or  just only employee. From my point of view, I would rather be to go into business for myself. I would explore only a few primary ones here.

The main problem with this argument is that it is ignorant of the basic fact that company of one’s own has more benefit than employee. The employees get a little money, called salary,  from total profit which business gets while the employer get the part of money remaining. It also shows us why one like to become a employer.

Another reason why I think owing the company is better than a employee is that I would like to be an excellent  leader. The business only successes if leader of business has skills and techniques  such as plant one’s succession, really listen, know one’s team,…. I had studied and experienced  these skills and techniques while I was a student. So, I believe that I can lead my company to achieve great success.

What is more, I like to challenge myself to life. I like putting myself under pressure. Only pressure on
working is increasing, I can show all my ability. I want to know my limitation of capacity and how I the
feeling of pushing myself to working and get success is wonderful. How great to experience that feeling in the life.  

In a word, I prefer to be a employer rather than to be a employee because I want to earn more money
and to success in leading. Also going through the life by challenging myself is another reason.
And I want to say that my life is happier if I own my business.

5 điều tâm nguyện cho học viên học tiếng Anh trong năm mới

Vào thời điểm sắp bước sang năm mới, người dân Mỹ thường đặt ra những mục tiêu để nhất quyết theo đuổi trong năm mới, thí dụ như người mập thì tâm nguyện năm mới sẽ tìm mọi cách như tập thể thao và ăn uống kiêng khem để giảm cân, người nghiện thuốc lá tâm nguyện sẽ bớt hoặc bỏ thuốc để cải thiện tình trạng sức khỏe và còn vô số những điều tâm nguyện khác mà người ta tự hứa sẽ theo đuổi trong năm tới. Nhưng có làm được hay không lại là chuyện khác. Riêng về chuyện học ngoại ngữ, một giáo chức dạy tiếng Anh, bà Lida Baker đề nghị 5 điều tâm nguyện cho những ai muốn tiến bộ trong việc học ngôn ngữ này. Lan Phương trong Lá Thư Mỹ Quốc hôm nay mời quí vị nghe TTV Rosanne Skirble của đài chuyện trò với bà Lida Baker.

Giáo chức Lida Baker đề nghị 5 điều tâm nguyện cho những ai đang học Anh ngữ.

Bà Baker nói: “Ðiều tâm nguyện đầu tiên mà tôi đề nghị các học viên nên theo đuổi trong năm mới, là mỗi ngày phải nghe tiếng Anh trong một khoảng thời gian nào đó, 5 phút một ngày, 10 phút 1 tuần hay bất cứ một thời lượng nào đó thích hợp cho thời biểu của từng cá nhân. Nhưng điều quan trọng là phải đặt ra một mục tiêu và theo sát nó. Nếu có phương tiện Internet thì thật tốt vì tôi đề nghị nên vào chương trình nào dạy ngoại ngữ trên internet mà có cả tài liệu để theo dõi.”

Nếu không có máy computer thì phải làm sao để luyện khả năng nghe ngoại ngữ?

Bà Baker nói: “Này nhé, hầu như tất cả mọi người trên thế giới đều có cách để nghe được nhạc pop. Và một trong những tâm nguyện mà tôi đề nghị là hãy để thời giờ nghe nhạc hát bằng tiếng Anh. Điều tuyệt diệu khi nghe nhạc là mình luyện được cách phát âm rất chuẩn. Mình nghe được những dấu giọng và những nhịp điệu của ngôn ngữ trong bài ca. Vả lại lời nhạc chứa đựng nhiều thành ngữ, vì vậy đó thật là cách tuyệt hay để học những từ bình dân và luyện giọng. Cái lợi thứ ba trong chuyện nghe nhạc là lời nhạc rất dễ nhớ.”

Vì thế đối với những ai chỉ có phương tiện nghe radio thôi thì họ cũng có thể học tiếng Anh chỉ bằng cách nghe nhạc pop. Và tôi cũng nói thêm rằng nếu như quí vị có phương tiện tiếp cận internet thì có rất nhiều trang web viết cả lời nhạc. Hãy truy cập, đánh từ ‘music’ (nhạc) hay ’songs’ (bài hát), thêm từ ‘lyrics’ (lời nhạc). Rồi quí vị sẽ tìm ra những địa chỉ quí vị có thể đánh tựa của bản nhạc vào để tìm ra lời nhạc.

Vậy là bỏ ra thêm chút thời giờ để nghe hoặc đặt mục tiêu để làm sao phải có thời giờ nghe ngoại ngữ. thêm vào đó là nghe nhạc. Vậy còn có những mục tiêu nào khác mà học viên phải tâm nguyện?

Bà Baker nói: “Có một chuyện nữa khi tôi đề nghị với học viên thì ai cũng ngạc nhiên, đó là: hãy đọc truyện nhi đồng, truyện dành cho trẻ em.”

Sách truyện nhi đồng, chỉ có ít câu chữ và ý nghĩa rất rõ ràng, đơn giản, đã vậy lại có nhiều hình ảnh giúp ta dễ nhớ.

Bà Baker nói Đúng vậy. Một điều khác nữa là quí vị sẽ thấy sách truyện nhi đồng lại có đủ mọi trình độ. Nếu là người vừa mới bắt đầu học Anh ngữ, quí vị nên bắt đầu với những cuốn chỉ có dăm ba chữ ở mỗi trang mà thôi, còn lại toàn là hình ảnh dẫn giải. Thế rồi trình độ của các em càng cao thì sách truyện dành cho các em càng nhiều chữ hơn và hình ảnh bớt đi. Nhưng tôi muốn nhắc lại một lần nữa là sách truyện dành cho trẻ em có động lực thúc đẩy rất tốt giúp ta trong việc học tiếng Anh. Cho tới bây giờ tôi vẫn thích đọc những sách truyện nhi đồng mà tôi từng đọc cho con gái nhỏ của tôi nghe trước kia.

Vậy là bà đã đề nghị 4 điều tâm nguyện rồi nhé, đó là nghe radio, nghe nhạc, lên mạng tìm tài liệu dành cho những chương trình dạy tiếng Anh để học kèm theo với tài liệu nghe, đọc sách nhi đồng. thế còn điều tâm nguyện thứ 5 là gì vậy thưa bà?

Bà Baker nói: “Mỗi ngày phải học một ít từ. Nếu như không có thời giờ để học mỗi ngày, thì cách một ngày phải học một lần. Một lần nữa, quí vị phải đặt mục tiêu thực tế. Chọn lựa từ, tra tự điển xem nghĩa. Nhưng không ngừng ở đấy. Phải đọc những thí dụ trong tự điển xem người ta dùng từ đó như thế nào. Từ được dùng như một danh từ, một tĩnh từ hay một động từ ? Nếu là một tĩnh từ thì nó có nghĩa tốt hay nghĩa xấu. Vì thế phải tìm hiểu cái hàm ý, cái nghĩa bóng của từ đó. Và rồi khi ngồi trong xe hay đi bộ tới tạm xe buýt hay ngồi trên xe buýt thì bạn hãy thực tập cách dùng những từ đó. Hãy suy nghĩ để tìm ra những cách sử dụng từ đó.”

Và bây giờ là điều tâm niệm cuối cùng. Điều này lại khó theo nhất đấy nhé. Đó là hãy nói chuyện với người mà tiếng Anh là tiếng mẹ đẻ của họ. Nếu không thường xuyên thì bất khi nào có dịp thì quí vị nên nắm lấy ngay cơ hội mà thực tập.

We are happy to announce the bearing of the Ho Chi Minh City Summer Mathematical Meeting (Summer Meeting for short) Summer Meeting is an annual meeting organized by former students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, who are currently studying and doing mathematics abroad. It is hold each summer at the school on the occasion of their home visits.

The official website of the meeting is at

The main objectives of our Summer Meeting are: fostering a community of Vietnamese mathematicians working abroad; providing an opportunity for interactions between that community and the faculty and students at our home institution, exposing the latter to current mathematics; and improving the quality of mathematical education in our home institution. Further, we hope that the meeting will be beneficial to all participants too.

The first meeting will be the second week of July 2008 (tentatively) at the University of Natural Sciences, Ho Chi Minh City.

We intend that the range of topics at the meeting can be wide, including original researches, surveys of new and not so new subjects, discussions on mathematical education … We also intend that the atmosphere at our meeting to be more relax and less formal than at a regular conference.

We welcome all of participants regardless of background and origins. If you would like to attend the meeting (giving talks or not), please feel free contact one of the committee members.

Thanks, yeah, big thanks to our precious Authors. We all are now busy and rarely have chance to get online for the blog, and it was our precious Authors who have spent their time checking comments, replying and writing posts.

There are some unpublished drafts going on. Just to make sure for our Authors, when you are finished and want to publish please make sure that you hit the “Publish” button instead of “Save”, then check if the article has been posted (I have done it wrong several times then realized my post was not online till days later )

Other thanks go to our readers. We received helpful comments from our readers as Tâm, Hong Thuy, Khac Phuoc,… (I’m sorry I can’t remember all ^_^ ), and use them to update our post. We also have a comment from a special “reader”, Paul Scott from bbclearningenglish.com replying our concerns about the Blog Competition on BBC Learning Network that has been mentioned in one of our posts .

Recently, even though we don’t get online often, we still think of the blog and, hopefully, when we have more free time to come back there will be some new ideas for our blog. A new busy semester

Blog’s news and new ideas are needed.

1. Recently we received some nice ideas from htluan’s suggestions: “In my opinion, writing Vietnamese on this blog is a bad idea already. The exceptions may be the translation from Vietnamese to English, and in a few cases from English to Vietnamese. Writing Vietnamese without accents here is the worst ever.“

About the Vietnamese without accents problem, I’ve just add it into Blog’s rule. I don’t know whether using “rule” here is appropriate or not but can’t think of anything else now . We only have one “rule” so far, that is no Vietnamese without accents comments will be accepted from now on

And about writing in English, yeah we would encourage everyone to use English no matter how bad their English could be. So, except for some special posts that should be written in Vietnamese because of its originality (such as some of Dr. Le Dung’s or a Long’s) we better use English more often

2. About a month ago, we scarcely saw comments from our READERS, mostly us AUTHORS wrote and commented for themselves so we was quite sad for a while. Two wordmaps were then placed on the site, one with name of locations and one without. Surprisingly, we see there are so many visitors from around the world and that cheered us up a little bit Our Department is from Ho Chi Minh city, but from both maps we see a lot more accesses from our friends from Ha Noi.

Again, welcome to anyone who come to visit us. Please leave comments about your thoughts, suggestion, questions for us (and remember not to use unaccented Vietnamese )

3. About the writing topic each week, I was so busy to take care for it, and asked some guys to help me with posting new topics each week but it seemed that they forgot it. I am wondering myself should we keep that going on, and reduce it for like once per 2 or 3 weeks? As we are now at the beginning of the new academic year, everyone should be much busier so we won’t be able to keep track and fix errors from essays so often.

3. New ideas for the blog are needed. We are now short of new ideas for this blog to make it more alive, so if you have one yours will be very appreciated The Contribution page is actually for this “góp ý” thing, but it is so deserted that we figured out it is better to bring this concern to the front page. Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!!!

A . NEWS.

Yeah, good news. There are more students back home give comments, and others are encourage to do so. Don’t hesitate fearing that your English is not good enough to express anything, just try and you will get better.

Next, we now have a very young and active member. She gave out lots of comments recently . (I don’t know if you realized it or not, her English style is not like most of us. I should say that hers is the American English ) Introducing Uyên, Dr. Dũng’s daughter, our new Author. We are happy to have her here, together with our other Authors who are very strong in American English as anh Thống, thầy Dũng, … She offers to help us, so you guys back home better take this opportunity to “speak” more here

B . SUGGESTIONS

Following are some suggestions received either from email or from comments in the blog.

1. About our Online resources posts: Beside citing a good and interesting website, we may better have some words of introduction for that website: why it is interesting, what kind of information we can get there, what we can do there, the interesting features it offers, …

2. About speaking practice: we are forgetting it. Speaking is our weakest part in the TOEFL test and it seems like we don’t have enough practice for it. Basically we can’t practice speaking by writing comments but it can help in some extend.

Here is a suggestion: we may post the Speaking Topics as we did with Writing topics. You try to complete it as you were taking the test, record your speaking, then type it and post it here online so others can give comments and suggestions. As for speaking topics, you guys at home will be responsible for searching it and posting it here We now need some more Authors/Contributors at home who are willing to do this. Remember that doing this don’t just benefit others but will benefit you a lot
